Concert & Performance

Sacred Music

Sacred music speaks in and of itself to the mystery of God. When sacred music and sacred space meet, a wonderful sacred dialogue is created which unmistakably speaks of the mystery of God.  In keeping with its mission and befitting the sacred nature of the building, the Basilica hosts many national and international choirs and orchestras who perform sacred music concerts. Anyone who is interested in performing at the Basilica may contact us at 612.333.1381.  Some of the groups who perform at The Basilica annually include:

Rose Ensemble

A twelve-member professional, early music ensemble, founded and directed by Jordan Sramek, The Rose Ensemble was first to become artists-in-Residence at the Basilica in 1996. The ensemble sings in the Basilica at several events throughout the year, including three concerts and numerous liturgies. In addition to providing seasonal Gregorian chants and other liturgical music for Masses on the Basilica's Missa Choralis series, a six-voice schola from the Rose Ensemble sings Gregorian vespers once a month.

For more than fifteen years, Minnesota Sinfonia has provided free weekend afternoon concerts at the Basilica, availing readily accessible music to a wide variety of people. Both children and adults like the holiday concert.

Saint John's and Saint Benedict's

The Basilica of Saint Mary, the University of Saint John and College of Saint Benedict enjoy a close relationship. We like to think of ourselves as the Abbey in the City. One of the highpoints in this collaboration is the annual Christmas concert by the combined choirs and instrumental groups of the University of Saint John and College of Saint Benedict.

National Lutheran Choir

The Basilica's commitment to ecumenical and interfaith relationships is realized in many different ways. In addition to joined prayer and social outreach, study groups and political actions, we also engage in artistic ecumenism. Most indicative are the well-loved Christmas concerts by the renowned National Lutheran Choir.

Founded in 1969 under the name Plymouth Music Series, VocalEssence is recognized internationally for innovative exploration of music for voices and instruments.

This sacred Holocaust memorial oratorio was commissioned by the Basilica to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the death camps at the end of World War II and the 40th anniversary of the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate. Created by composer Stephen Paulus and librettist Michael Dennis Browne, the premiere was performed by The Minnesota Orchestra, The Basilica Cathedral Choir, Basilica Children’s Choirs, Cantor Barry Abelson and a number of renowned soloists. – Photo by Michael Jensen. The group performs a wide-range of choral repertoire, from commissioned new works to choral masterpieces.  Their annual Lenten concert at the Basilica is a program of contemplative, soul-stirring music.

The annual performance of George Frederic Handel’s Messiah is a holiday concert favorite.

The Minnesota Boychoir is a 45 year old musical tradition dedicated to musical excellence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership preparation.  They typically sing for Missa Choralis each year and often hold a concert here as well.

Many other groups have performed at the Basilica throughput the years, including Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Sixteen, Sequentia, the Vienna Boys Choir, Hangad, The African Children’s Choir, and the Westminster Abbey Choir.
