Adult Choirs

Assembly

The primary minister of the liturgy and thus of liturgical music is the assembly, in all its diversity and with its specific ministers to serve them. In the preparation and execution of the liturgy every effort must be made to allow for the assembly to exercise its liturgical role as singers of the liturgy.

The Basilica Cathedral Choir

An 90-voice auditioned, volunteer choir provides choral music on Sunday for the 9:30am Eucharist as well as on Holy Days of Obligation. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm. The Basilica Cathedral Choir sings repertoire spanning a wide range of genres and covering many centuries. The Basilica Cathedral Choir's newest CD is available for purchase. View our 2012 Advent and Christmas repertoire.

*Angelicum

Angelicum women’s choir was -founded in 2003 by Teri Larson and a group of former Campus Singers from the College of Saint Benedict and is based at The Basilica of Saint Mary.  The choir is composed of talented women from The Basilica of Saint Mary community, but predominantly alumni from the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota.  In the archives of The Basilica of Saint Mary, there is evidence of a women’s choir that rehearsed in the basement of a home nearby.  Since it is said that over 500 angels adorn the inside of The Basilica of Saint Mary's nave and sanctuary, the name seemed appropriate and so it was adopted.

The choir is committed to singing high quality music from all genres, with the highest level of execution.  They currently sing for the 5:00pm Saturday Missa Choralis series at The Basilica of Saint Mary, and other liturgies throughout the year.  The choir performs 1-2 concerts per year. Inclusion into the choir is by audition. Reading music is required. Auditions held by appointment in August. To schedule an audition, contact Teri Larson.

*Currently, Angelicum is an inactive choir.

Cantor Choir and Psalmists

Members of the cantor choir assist the assembly in the singing of the liturgy. They gather every week to prepare for this ministry. Psalmists sing the responsorial psalm during the liturgy of the Word. They, too, meet to prepare for the liturgy.

Cantor Choir Auditions
Auditions for a cantor position are two-fold. The first round includes a formal audition. Requirements are: Resume; Aria or Art Song (accompanist provided); two prepared psalms (see choices below); one psalm to sight-read at audition; and vocal range check.

After successful completion of this round, potential cantors are scheduled to sing a responsorial or communion psalm at a regularly scheduled liturgy.  Requirements are: attending the Wednesday workshop prior to the Sunday scheduled, and preparing the appropriate psalm for proclamation.

To schedule the first round of auditions, contact Teri Larson.
