Learning Programs

Programs reflect a balanced approach to catechesis. The Children's Ministry program utilizes Catholic teachings and practices, creative methods and Christ-centered content. We do charge an annual fee for these programs to cover the costs of curriculum and catechist training. Parents may contribute volunteer hours if unable to pay the fee.

Pflaum Gospel Weeklies

The program consists of a faith formation handbook – What the Church Believes and Teaches – for each child, plus 32 weekly Gospel-based lessons. Together they provide a unique alternative to the traditional textbook.

The handbook leads children to understand the basics of the Catholic faith;the weekly lessons inspire them to seek out ways to practice their faith in their daily lives. Icons in the weekly guides help the teacher link weekly lessons to doctrine in the handbook. The Gospel connection helps prepare children for talking about Sunday Mass with their families.

Sessions for the Lectionary-based Faith Formation programs are held on Sunday morning (grades K-5) and Wednesday evenings (grades 1-5).

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

This is an approach based on the conviction that God and the child are in spiritual relationship. The child has a deep need to experience and a special capacity to enjoy the presence of God. The task of the adult is to help the child live fully the encounter with God. When helped to do so, this experience becomes formative of the child’s whole person and generates great joy. A key element in the implementation of the catechesis is the involvement of the parents of the children to be served. This program is based upon the Montessori or experiential learning model.

Good Shepherd programs are held on Sunday mornings.

Parent Involvement

Our program is carried out through the commitment and dedication of parent volunteer catechists under the direction and supervision of the Learning staff. Catechists work in teams with specific student groups. Without these dedicated volunteer catechists we would not have a children’s program. Additional help from parents is expected for classroom assistance, special events and projects. If you would like information about serving as a volunteer catechist, classroom assistant or special events person, please contact the Learning Office.
