Mental Health Ministry

The Basilica of Saint Mary created the Mental Health Ministry in response to the needs of its faith community members, and focuses on issues surrounding mental illness, including mental health wellness and awareness, education, and outreach. The Mental Health Ministry recognizes that mental illness within the community causes great pain and anguish for the people suffering from the problem, as well as for the community itself. Among the great problems surrounding mental illness are secrecy, shame, stigma, and denial. One way to alleviate some of this pain is to play a role in educating our parish and our community. The Basilica and the Mental Health Ministry believe that the person's religious faith and spirituality are part of the overall treatment and recovery process.

The wooden Angels, found in the Apse of the church near the Organ pipes, were hand carved in 1912 in Europe. Each one has a different face and hairstyle. Originally, these angels were over the main alter in the Sacred Heart Chapel at St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, Minnesota. They were acquired by the Basilica in 1992. – Photo by Michael Jensen. [Close]
