Receptions at The Basilica

The following information is intended to assist your family in planning a funeral reception. If you have other questions, please contact Cathy Edwards 612.317.3474.

Funeral Ministry Volunteers

The Funeral Ministry volunteers will:

  • Set buffet tables with cloths, food, paper plates, paper napkins and plastic ware.
  • Prepare and serve water, lemonade and coffee, regular and decaf.
  • Set round tables for 8 with white cloths and centerpieces of mirror and votives.
  • Welcome and direct guests.
  • Replenish buffet table as necessary.
  • Clean-up.

Fees

The fee for the space is $250.00 for parish members and $350.00 for non members. Fee for Table linens is included in space fee for up to 100 guests. There is an additional cost of $130.00 for 200 people and $195.00 for 300 people for table linens.

Catering

  • Depending on the time of day, Funeral Receptions may serve a luncheon, light buffet or desserts and coffee. What ever you wish to serve will be decided by your family and the chosen caterer.
  • All items for your reception should be brought table-ready and be able to be served at room temperature. There is a beverage prep area, but no kitchen or ovens and very limited refrigeration.
  • Services available through your caterer may range from dropping off ready-to-serve trays to a full service event with wait staff, set tables and serving of beverages and food.

Following is a list of some caterers the Basilica has used for receptions. You are very welcome to use any caterer.

Bucca del Beppo  612-288-0138
Chef Jeff  651-292-4160
D’Amico  612-238-4444
Kowalski’s Catering 1-888-972-7890
Piazzas   763-542-8107
Lunds and Byerlys      952-897-9800

You may also want to consider deli trays from Costco, Sam’s or Kowalski’s. If you purchase trays for pick-up, it is a good idea to give that responsibility to a responsible family friend who is willing to miss some of the funeral liturgy.

Private Food Handling

If you plan to bring food items without or in addition to a caterer, food items should arrive plated and ready to place on the buffet table. The Undercroft space has a beverage prep area with refrigeration for beverages. The space does not have any food prep space or heating/cooling availability. Health guidelines do not allow for the volunteers to prepare or plate the food.

Flowers and Left Over Food

You are encouraged to take left over food home with you. You may have people dropping in or your own family may wish to have something ready made when hunger hits later in the day.  It is a good idea to designate a family friend to coordinate this, someone who will not be going to the cemetery and who can drop things off at your home.

If you do not want the leftover food, the Basilica can give it to guests who come to the door, or you may wish to donate it to Branch II food shelf, 612-338-8093. There are some restrictions and time specifics for delivering food to Branch II.

Flowers that have been brought down to the reception can be a wonderful gift for family and friends to take home from the reception. If you would like, the volunteers will gather flowers up at the end of the reception and put them on the buffet tables for your guests to take home.

Serving

Funeral ministry volunteers will set all tables with linens or placemats and centerpieces. They will also be on hand to assist your family by greeting your guests, serving beverages at the beverage station, and refilling buffet tables as needed with reserve platters of food.

If your family wishes to have a more formal reception with set places, individual serving of food, and tabled beverages, your caterer should provide catering staff for these tasks.

Technical Capabilities

If you would like to have DVD, video, or sound system, we are happy to arrange it. Please let the staff know if you will be using any of the above prior to the day of the reception so technical needs are able to be met.
