JustFaith

JustFaith

The JustFaith program is a national program designed by JustFaith Ministries.

The homeless. Third-world residents. Gang members. It can be easy to see these groups as "the other" -- but really, they’re us, they’re our neighbors, they’re people the Gospel calls us to embrace with love.

JustFaith lets participants explore the world through the eyes of our neighbors, broadening perspectives on poverty, homelessness and inequality, and helping participants discover some of the ways different groups are approaching these challenges locally and around the world.

All this is done in small groups of eight to 15 people who discuss assigned readings, listen to guest speakers, and go out into the community to meet with people affected by poverty and inequality. At the close of the program, there is an opportunity to discern how you are being called to take action in response to the topics covered in JustFaith.

JustFaith groups meet once a week for two-hour gatherings over 24 weeks, plus an opening and closing retreat. Regular weekly meetings are divided into four six-week sessions with a few weeks in between sessions for personal reflection. There are also three optional gatherings for guided discernment at the close of JustFaith. The six-week sessions cover:

Phase 1: Making Space for Compassion: Making an Option for the Poor
Phase 2: Uncovering the Systems of Poverty: At Home and Globally
Phase 3: Looking in the Mirror: Racism and Privilege
Phase 4: Making Way for the New: Simplicity, Non-Violence and Forgiveness

Assigned readings in past years have included “Tattoos on the Heart” (http://www.homeboyindustries.org/shop-homeboy/view/tattoos-on-the-heart-english-paperback/  ) by Gregory Boyle; “Compassion: A Reflection on the Christian Life” (http://www.henrinouwen.org/Books/Bibliography/Books/Compassion.aspx  ) by Henri J.M. Nouwen, Donald P. McNeill and Douglas A. Morrison; and “Cloud of Witnesses” (http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Witnesses-Jim-Wallis/dp/157075571X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1364423335&sr=1-1&keywords=cloud+of+witnesses ) by Jim Wallis and Joyce Hollyday.

The Basilica’s next session of JustFaith is expected to begin in October and run through May. For more information, contact Amanda (amanda.keim@gmail.com) , Deb (Deb.Polchow@anoka.k12.mn.us)  or Janice
