Outreach Ministries

Outreach Ministry

The Basilica St. Vincent de Paul Outreach Ministry began in 1995 as a ministry of listening, hospitality, and hope. Since then, Outreach Ministry has provided assistance to those in the community who are in need. Through the Outreach Ministry, volunteers meet with guests and listen to their stories in a spiritual context.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9:30-11:30am, volunteers provide hospitality, support, listen, and pray with guests.

What type of assistance do we provide?

  • Bus cards for those with new jobs (letter from employer required)
  • Gas cards (every 12 months-valid driver’s license required)
  • Thrift store vouchers for clothing and house-wares
  • Identification fees (driver’s license, state identification cards, and birth certificates)
  • Referrals to other agencies for job searching and other goods and services
  • Bus ticket to an out of town funeral for an immediate family member. Limit two per family. Family member defined as parent, child, sibling or shouse.
  • Furniture program applications are accepted from residents of 55401, 55402, 55403, 55405, and 55411

Note: above assistance is available every 12 months.

SVdP Outreach Changes Lives . . .

St. Vincent de Paul Outreach Ministry guest Leonard lost his job in the mail room of a Minneapolis law firm. He visited Outreach Ministry and met with volunteer Ellen who listened to his story. Since Leonard lost his job he was having difficulty paying his rent. He asked Ellen if Outreach Ministry could help pay for a portion of his rent while he searched for new employment. Ellen submitted an application, and the assistance was approved which kept him from becoming homeless.

But, that’s not the end of the story. While Leonard was visiting Outreach ministry he noticed a posting on our “jobs board”. He followed up, was hired temporarily, and then eventually full-time.

After securing his job, Leonard returned to Outreach Ministry and visited with volunteer Darla. Leonard was thrilled with his job but was in a bind – he couldn’t afford a bus card to get to the job and didn’t want to lose the opportunity for employment. Darla heard his story and assisted him with two bus cards which enabled him to reach his job until he received his first paycheck and could purchase bus cards for himself.

Later, he visited St. Vincent de Paul Shoe Ministry as he realized he needed steel-toed boots- a requirement for his job which he couldn’t afford. We assisted him with the boots so he could meet the requirement and stay safe in the factory setting in which he worked.

Leonard stopped by Outreach Ministry a few weeks ago and reported more good news – he received a raise! He is very grateful for the caring and compassionate assistance of St. Vincent de Paul Ministries.
