Today's Reading
Friday of week 15 in Ordinary Time, or...

The Church has always relied on music as its primary voice of prayer. Over the centuries a rich tradition of liturgical music has been and continues to be developed. Worship without music is simply inconceivable. Sacred music, even outside of the context of the liturgy, plays an important role in the life of the Church as it speaks eloquently of the mystery of faith and lifts our hearts and minds to God.

The Basilica is committed to the preservation, presentation and promotion of high quality liturgical and sacred music from the great repository of our rich musical tradition, growing contemporary tradition, and music from our World Church.

Liturgical Music

Liturgical music differs from sacred music in that the former exists in the service of the liturgy, whereas the latter can exist for its own sake. Liturgical music is sacred music because both reveal the Divine. The two differ, as liturgical music serves the liturgy, whereas sacred music augments the liturgy as other art forms do.

Sacred Music

Although not distinct from liturgical music in its message, sacred music differs from liturgical music in its usage. Sacred music speaks in and of itself to the mystery of God. Many choirs and orchestral groups ask to perform their sacred music in the sacred context of The Basilica. When sacred music and sacred space meet, a wonderful sacred dialogue is created which unmistakably speaks of the mystery of God.

Visiting Musicians

Worship with the music of visiting musicians from our local community and around the world.

If you or a loved one is living with serious illness and you would like someone to come and sing songs of life, light and peace, the newly formed Basilica Threshold Singers offers their singing as a gift of healing. They will come to your home, hospice, nursing home or hospital. You may talk with a coordinator to make arrangements by calling Cathy Edwards at 612-333-1381. For more information pick up a card located at any of the Basilica entrances.
