Promote Peace in the World

Journey of Refugees

During December and January, we'll explore the journey of refugees.  Fleeing natural disaster, war or persecution in their home country for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or membership in a social group or political faction – fear drives refugees to seek safe haven in another country.

In the United States, refugees are assigned a city to be their new home.  With 2.2 million refugees on the move outside of Syria alone, this international issue is also critically important in Minnesota.  Over 70,000 refugees call Minnesota home and they have faced  barriers like language, finding a job, education health care, and navigating a new culture.
As Catholics, consider that Christ and the Holy Family had to flee persecution and lived in exile in Egypt.  Please consider our connection to refugees throughout the world and in our community.  Explore these connections through our traditions, art, and faith. One person can make a difference!

Refugees Worldwide and in Minnesota

Did you know...

  • 268 refugees arrived in Minnesota this year alone.
  • Over 70,000 refugees reside in Minnesota.
  • 100 ethnic groups live in the Phillips neighborhood in south Minneapolis, making it the most diverse neighborhood in the United States.
  • Minnesota has the largest Somali community in the US and the largest Hmong community outside of Laos. Minnesota is home to large Ethiopian, Cambodian, Bhutanes, Liberian and Vietnamese communities.
  • 8 months - the US provides financial assistance to refugee families.
  • 25-30 % of Minnesota immigrants in a single year are refugees compared to 8% nationally.
  • 80% of refugees worldwide are women and children.
  • 46% of refugees worldwide were under age 18 in 2012.
  • 895,000 individuals applied for asylum or refugees status in 2011.
  • Only 11% of these requests were fulfilled.
  • 80% of refugees are hosted in developing countries.

Why is Minnesota home to so many refugees?

Minnesota has strong social benefits and support systems provided by government and non-profits.  Catholic Relief Services, Lutheran Social Services, the American Refugees Committee and World Relief Minnesota help refugees find housing, acclimate to the culture and provide language assistance .

Take Action TODAY

  • Read the Global Stewardship Resource Kit online, or print as a booklet.   For prayers, reflection and action for yourself or for a group.
  • Pray for the volunteers and organizations working with refugees in Minnesota and around the world.
  • Reflect on your own unique relationship with God. How do you build relationships with refugees who are tying to make a new home in Minnesota?  How do we build relationships with refugees around the world?  Consider the sacredness of each human being.
  • Learn about one non-profit changing Refugees lives by offering education and resources to help them rebuild their lives in a new country.
  • Pray for peace in the world.
Volunteers in Nyakabande Transit Centre in Uganda distribute one of two meals per day at one of five common kitchens. The Transit Centre for refugees is run by the United National High Commissioner (UNHCR). [Close]

Prayer for Refugees

Almighty and merciful God, Help me to bring peace to your world.

Look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger and
afraid, homeless and hungry.
Bless those who work to bring them relief;
inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts:
and guide the nations of the world towards that day
when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and peace.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen
