Mission, Vision, Values

Seek the well-being of the city to which I have sent you. Pray for it to the Lord. For in seeking its well-being, you shall find your own. - Jeremiah 29:7

The Basilica of Saint Mary is a community rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As the Co-Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, it is our mandate to model, inspire and to provide excellence in liturgy, faith formation, pastoral care and hospitality; to preach justice and provide emergency relief to the poor; to pursue interfaith relationships; and to contribute to the celebration of the sacred arts in this community. The parish is marked by hospitality and a rich diversity.

As a community rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we profess values critical to our parish culture and character. As we strive to achieve our vision and mission, these values form the basis of our behavior and are a motivational force.

Acknowledgement in word and action that all creation bears the image of God.
All members and ministries actively reach out and welcome all who come here.
A deliberate attempt to include the broadest possible participation of people in the community.
The conscious communal pursuit and experience of God in all that we do.
The internalization of the belief that one can be candid and truthful in a very respectful way, in order to move forward the mission of the Basilica.
The feeling of an intimate connection within the organization, the staff and parishioners.

Bronze sculpture by Frederick Hart (1943-1999). This almost life-size sculpture depicts the anguish of Christ’s sacrifice and the power of his resurrection. Donated to the Basilica in 2000 by a family in the parish, this statue now resides in the stairway to the undercroft – near the narthex of the church. – Photo by Michael Jensen. [Close]
